Make a cozy autumn table incense holder out of clay

Even if you’ve never touched clay before

Hands painting a miniature clay autumn table with a gingham cloth, pumpkin, pie slice, books, and a tiny mug with incense smoke rising like steam

Imagine if you could…

Why total beginners can make this table (yes, even the gingham cloth):

Let’s be honest. At first glance, this little table might look intimidating. Too detailed for someone who has never touched clay. But in fact…

It’s surprisingly simple. If you look closer, each piece is very basic.

The tablecloth is just a thin sheet of clay, draped over a round base.

The mug is a small cylinder with a little handle.

The pumpkin is a ball with a few lines pressed in.

The books are tiny rectangles, stacked.

And the gingham pattern? It looks like the hardest part, but it’s just painted stripes, one way and then the other.

You’re not sculpting one complicated piece. You’re putting it together from small, satisfying wins.

One shape, one piece, one step at a time.

You don’t need a kiln, an oven, or some secret pottery skill.

You don’t need to be artistic.

You don’t need steady hands or perfect details.

You just need to start.

And it gets even easier, because I’ll be right there with you.

Let me introduce myself:

The instructor smiling at a wooden table in her cozy studio, surrounded by autumn leaves

Hi, I’m Kathy! I’m the one behind this cozy little table, and I promise, I didn’t start out as some kind of clay expert.

Honestly, I used to look at tiny clay pieces like this and think, “There’s no way I could make that.”

But over time, I started experimenting. Just rolling, shaping, painting, for fun. And what I discovered was: you don’t need to be an artist to make something magical.

That’s exactly why I created this masterclass. To give beginners a way to make something that looks like it came from a little shop, but feels simple and cozy to make.

If you’ve ever wanted to make something cozy and handmade with your own two hands, you’re in exactly the right place.

Introducing...

The Cozy Table Incense Holder Masterclass

The masterclass lessons shown on a desktop monitor, laptop, tablet, and phone: the finished clay table, sculpting a tiny pumpkin, and shaping the table base

A beginner-friendly masterclass that walks you through every step of one beautiful project. You'll use air-dry clay and simple tools, and you'll finish with a real incense holder that makes your whole room feel like fall.

Module 1: Building the Table and Base

Your first big moment: the little table that holds it all.

  • How to keep your clay soft and workable the whole time, so it doesn’t crack in your hands.
  • The easy way to shape a sturdy base that sits flat and steady.
  • The simple draping trick that gives your tablecloth soft, real-looking folds.
  • Where to pierce the ventilation hole, and why this tiny step is what makes the smoke flow.

Module 2: Sculpting the Chimney Mug and Mini Treats

Kathy carving ridges into a tiny clay pumpkin, next to a clay mug, a pie slice, and a little book

This is where your table starts to feel cozy.

  • How to shape the hollow coffee mug right over the smoke hole, so it works like a tiny chimney.
  • Why the pumpkin is secretly the easiest treat to make.
  • The trick to a pie slice with a crust that looks good enough to eat.
  • How to turn a few simple rectangles into a little stack of books.

Module 3: Slow-Drying to Prevent Cracking

The unpainted clay table, mug, pumpkin, pie slice, and book drying side by side on a wooden table

The quiet step most beginners rush, and why yours won’t crack.

  • How long to let every piece dry (24–48 hours) before you pick up a brush.
  • The simple drying setup that stops warping, shrinking, and cracks.
  • How to tell when your clay is truly ready for paint.

Module 4: Painting the Cozy Details

Painting the crust of a tiny pumpkin pie slice, next to a painted green mug and an orange pumpkin

The fun part: watching it come to life with color.

  • The easy way to paint the gingham plaid pattern, even if you’ve never painted a straight line.
  • How to bring out the pumpkin ridges and that golden pie crust.
  • The warm autumn accents that make the whole piece feel like fall.
  • Why painting on fully cured clay makes everything easier.

Module 5: Sealing and Lighting Your Incense

The final reveal: lighting your incense for the very first time.

  • Gloss or matte? How to choose a protective, moisture-resistant sealant for your piece.
  • How to put the whole scene together so every piece sits just right.
  • Where to place your burning cone so the smoke rises from the mug like fresh steam.

Frequently Asked Questions

I've never touched clay. Can I really do this?

Yes. This masterclass was made for total beginners. Every piece is broken into small steps, and you'll see each one up close.

Do I need a kiln or an oven?

No. Air-dry clay hardens on its own at room temperature. Your kitchen table is all the studio you need.

What supplies do I need?

Air-dry clay, a few acrylic paints, some small brushes, and a sealer. You'll get the full list in the first lesson.

Is it safe to burn incense on air-dry clay?

Yes, when you use it the way it’s shown in the masterclass. The burning cone never touches the clay. It sits on its own small heat-safe dish under the table, and the smoke rises up through the ventilation hole and out of the little mug. The sealant protects your piece from moisture and smoke stains. As with any incense, set it on a stable, heat-safe surface, keep it away from anything flammable, and never leave it burning unattended.
